PLAIN ROLLS

3/4 cup milk

3/4 cup warm water

1/4 cup sugar

1 pkg. or cake yeast

2-1/4 tsp. salt

4-1/2 cups flour

4-1/2 tbsp. shortening

Scald milk. Stir in sugar, salt, and shortening. Cool to lukewarm. Sprinkle warm water over yeast. Stir until dissolved. Stir in lukewarm milk mixture. Add 1/4 of flour, beat until smooth. Stir in rest of flour. Turn out on lightly floured board. Knead until smooth and elastic. Place in greased bowl; brush with shortening. Cover and let rise in warm place, free from draft, until doubled in bull (about 1 hour) Punch down and turn out on lightly floured board. Form into desired shape rolls and bake in 325 degrees F. oven.
